What is per-pupil spending?
NYSED's official Total Expenditures per Pupil, sourced directly from the state — not a
local budget-divided-by-enrollment calculation, which can mislead where districts have
significant private-school populations. It's the one figure all 56 districts share,
making it the most consistent way to compare districts of different sizes — featured on
the Budget Overview and District Comparison pages.
How does my district compare?
The District Comparison page (page 4) shows your district's per-pupil spending alongside
every other district in Nassau County, plus how it trends against the county average over time.
What drives budget changes?
The biggest cost drivers are typically employee benefits, special education services,
and contractual salary increases. The "What's Driving Budget Changes" page (page 2)
breaks this down with a waterfall chart.
What is the property tax cap?
New York limits school district tax levy increases to the lesser of 2% or inflation. A
district can exceed the cap only with 60% voter approval.
